Win ME can’t see CD on secondary slave

by tilt . Updated 25 years, 3 months ago

I have a Win ME machine with a hard drive on primary master, an ATAPI DVD Drive on Secondary master. I bought a Plextor CD writer and installed it on Secondary slave. The BIOS can see both drives, but Win ME can only see whatever is there on the Secondary Master (I tried swapping the DVD and DC-RW between secondary master and slave). Funny thing is Win ME did not find any new hardware when I installed the drive.

I thought the problem was just with Windows, so I tried with my other OS on another partition, BeOS. BeOS had the same problem, only sees what is on the seccondary master.

OK, to add another complication now: In both operating systems, when I run the CD copying software, I can see both drives inside the softwares and also copy CDs! But Windows Explorer, the Device Manager, and the equivalents in BeOS do not see the drive at all!

And no, I did not install any drivers because the drive is supposed to be plug and pray.

I thought I’d try and connect the writer tothe Primary Slave, but then I found that the primary cable was narrower than the secondary cable! Is that possible or am I missing something? I mean, the secondary cable was a 39-pin and the primary was much narrower!

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
