Win Srvr 2003 network share issue

by shane.daugherty . Updated 23 years ago

I replaced a windows nt 4.0 server that was action as a PDC with a new server
running Windows Server 2003. I set it up as a domain controller and a file server
and there are no other servers on the network. All the client PC’s are either XP Pro
or 98. They are having a problem when accessing a shared directory on the D: drive.
If someone accesses a file on the network share such as a word document, word will freeze
and report ‘Non’Responding’ and will eventually come back and open. This happens once the
file has been opened and if the user tries to save it. If you access files on the
network share from a windows 98 machine and try to save it sometimes the it returns an
error that the file name cannot be more than 8 characters. The client PC’s are treating
the domain as a workgroup because they actually weren’t joined to the domain before with
the windows nt server and the users did not want to lose their desktop settings. Any
thoughts on what could be causing this? Thanks in advance for your help.
