Win-XP automaticaly restarts on shutdown

By davewarr ·
I was installing Roxio Easy CD Creator 5, during the restart that was asked for and I clicked on to restart. During the restart their was a power failture. Sence that time whenever I try to shut the computer down it automaticaly restarts every time.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled Easy CD and it makes no difference.
I have contacted Roxio and Microsoft for help with no luck.

Does anyone know how to stop the automatic reboot?

Check the system utilities and enable APM which may you may have to unhide files to enable.
This may be causing your problem
This can be done thru the Control Panel

Checked bios and tried different settings in APM but the problem turned out to be a bad power supply

Hi,

Yep, I had a similar problema and ended up not installing the DirectCD component of Easy CD Creator 5. I dont believe it has to do with any power problems you had.

This fixed it for me - XP has the ability to write directly to your CDRW anyway, so you wont miss the functionality.

If you do, however, I've since heard that you can install that single component after completing the rest of the installs and its then ok. I haven't tried it myself.

Make sure you use the XP_up utility from Roxio when you do the initial install too. In fact follow their suggested installation (Just dont install directCD bits)

Cheers,
Tim.

I don't think your problem is software. If I'm right you won't even solve it with a total restore.

I think your power failure blew your power supply. It is a known problem with the smart power supplies that every manufacturer now uses. The on/off switch is routed through the motherboard to allow the software Shutdown command to turn off the power supply. A power outage can damage the shutdown circuit and cause it to restart on shutdown yet the power supply otherwise performs normally. The problem is most prevalent with e-Machines.
COntact your hardware manufacturer tech support if in warranty, otherwise try replacing the power supply.

you can navigate thru the gpedit.msc there is one buried there to disable the autoshutdown. i did have the same problem and i tried to drill down that section in either the administrative templates of the computer and user section. to run the gpeditclick start run then type gpedit.msc and enter.
