Win2000 Won't recognize printer

By greig ·
We're running an old NT server. Our computers are mostly Win95, a couple of Win98's, and 2 new Win2000.
No problems with any of them recognizing the printers hooked up to the network.
One color printer is hooked up to one of the Win2000 computers and is shared. Everyone with Win95 or 98 can see and use that printer. The other Win2000 computer won't see it. I've followed all of the "sharing" instructions but am now at a loss.
Any suggestions?

Make sure its logged into the network..

I know this is obvious and you may have already done this but make sure the PC is logged in to the network or domain however you are setup. Make sure all the network connections are good to/from the PC in question. IF the PC has lost its connectionit will logon localy and not really be on the network if its logged on to the network before. Im just goin over basics that even us pros will overlook once in awhile. Make sure you can see other resources an your LAN. Try pinging the server or which ever PC the printer is hooked to.

You may want to check TCP/IP settings. Check DNS, ive seen instances where it worked better to add the connection info manually as well as the suffix info.
Try connecting to printer manually if you havent already. Try going to run and typing: \\servername\printername.
You may want to make sure all the services are turned on on the win2k PC. Check to make sure print spooler is on and well as any browser services.(usually just computer browser). May also check WORKSTATION and SERVER services. These are usually on but could be off. Check for any networking services that need to be on.
It mostly sounds like a networking issue of some kind. Hope this helps get you in the right area.

Add this script in the autoexec.bat.

net use lptN: \\server_name\Netwrk_printer_name

Where:
N = number of printer
server_name = Name of the server in the domain
Netwrk_printer_name = Printer name in the domain

Thanks,
