Win98 Install prob. during hardware det.

By tjm101 ·
During the hardware detection portion of the setup of Win98 I am given the following error "Windows\system\vmm32.vxd missing/unable to load."
The system is a Pentium 100, 24Mb RAM, 820MB hard drive.
Can anyone help me solve this problem?

Win98 Install prob. during hardware det.

This site says there's a bug in (or was a bug in earlier versions) of Win 98. While that may or may not be true (and I found another site that thinks it's hogwash), try manually extracting some files from the Win 98 CD as explained and see if it helps:

PS. Here's the guy who thinks the "bug" is hogwash:

This may have been a problem at one time but I have already done a clean install(FDISKed).
Thanks for the effort.

Boot with a floppy. At a command pmpt, change the dir to c:\windows\command...then type scanreg /restore. Choose a previous date that you had a successful boot.
Also,as crazy as it may sound,I had a similar problem when TCP/IPwas only partially installed.
Hope this helps.

This is a clean install(FDISKed). Is there going to be a registry to restore?

I could not find any knowledge base article on this error message. However, given the small size of your drive I would suspect the following; If this is an upgrade you may have limited space to do the install. Therefore, I would free up as much space as possible by deleting all temp files and deleting all Internet temp files. Clear off as much as possible off your hard drive. Then do a scandisk and then do a defrag and try reinstalling 98...sorry I could not be of further help.

Are you sure you have enough space on the hardrive or that it is compatible? I have seen such cases where the hard-drive was too old. Try a low-level format with DOS and rebuild.

Sorry for not rating this sooner,I have started a new job and don't have constant internet access.
I have also discovered that a memory module was defective.
