Win98 Installation

By afarah ·
I tried installing win98 over a an already existing version that I had trouble with and couldn't solve. The installation went fine until windows requested to restart the computer. The computer restarted normally, then I got the message "You are in MS Dos mode do you want to switch to windows mode? Y/N". If I answer yes then the computer goes into loop and if I answer no it goes into Dos mode and wouldn't start windows. what could be the problem? And I don't want to format the HDD and make a clean installation.

Using the CD only, insert in drive and see if you can install from cd,you have corrupt system files and win.com,run through set up without the startup disk which could be holding corrupt files,if this does not work you will have to do a clean install

Was this startup message initially your problem ie. "You are in MS Dos mode do you want to switch to windows mode? Y/N" ?.

Try the following . At startup , before windows boots , hold down the F8 key to go to the startup menu . Select Safe Mode then boot the computer , hopefully it will boot OK . Then Go to Accessories / system tools / sytem information then on the tools menu select system configuration utility . Open the Autoexec tab and UNcheck everything in it . APPLY /OK then restart the computer .

Good Luck !!!!!!

you can not install win 98 over win 98. it duplicates certain keys in the registry and makes a mess as you can see. unless you know how do properly edit the reg, you will have to dump the hard drive and reinstall a new copy of win 98

If you're having trouble with the existing installation that you can't solve, then trying to reinstall over the defective version is not likely to give you a good installation. In fact, since you are running into more problems, it appears the problems with the existing version are not solved by installing over it.

I'm afraid that you will have to bite the bullet and format the HDD and make a clean installation if you want to take the least amount of time and end up with a more reliable installation.

Good luck.

You can always specify a different location for the install location. Instead of c:\windows choose c:\win
