Win98 PC takes an age to shutdown

By waldekev ·
When doing a shutdown the PC sticks on a black screen with a cursor flashing in the top left hand corner. After 5 mins you hear the printer shutdown and the PC switches itself off. If you hit the poweroff button while the black screen is up it does a checkdisk next time you reboot.

Is your printer an Epsom? If so, you might want to try to uninstall the printer status monitor. Other than that look at Microsoft Knowledge Base Article Q202633

It may not necessarily be related to the printer. Hit CTRL + ALT + DEL at the desktop to bring the task manager up. In the task manager, close each running program by highlighting it and then clicking "end task". In a perfect world all the programs should close. If you have a program that doesn't close and requires you to "end task" due to it no longer responding, then you may want to look more closely at that program. It could be the source of your shut down problem.

You can also use the System Configuration Utility to find the source of the slow shutdown.
Disable startup items, until the program is found.
WARNING! I have seen a lot of PCs with this problem. It is usually a program for a hardware device, but not always. The actual root of the problem is the way Microsoft disseminates OS information, which leads to a lot of incompatabilities, funny behavior, etc.
Further joy.
You may have to actually uninstall hardware to find the cause. Fortunatly this is fairly rare.
Regards, Chris
