Windows 2000 Extended Memory

We have an old DOS spreadsheet program, lotus symphony. We are running it on a Windows 2000 PC. It will run on any PC, with a shortcut to the executable, regardless of the memory settings (pif). On any laptop, opening certain files gives an out of memory error. The app says that no extended memory is available.
