windows 2k setup problem

By ehughbanks ·
trying to install win 2k on a pIII,
the install starts, goes thru the hardware and software compatability, asks for the first boot, then continues to work and then asks for the win2000 cd to be put in and push enter, the cd is in but nothing happens, any ideas??

windows 2k setup problem

Try installing the OS without the bootdisk.

You can install WIN2K without using the bootdisk if your system support boot-up from CD-ROM Drive. As your system is a PIII, this option is generally available.

When you power-up your system, thereis an option to go to the CMOS/BIOS setup by entering the "F2" or "DEL" key (varied with systems). In the menu, look for boot options. You can configure your system to first boot from "C" drive, "A" drive or "CD-ROM" drive. As for this case, you would want to select boot from your "CD-ROM" drive. (at this stage, you would want to insert the WIN2K CD in the CD-ROM DRIVE) Be sure you save the setting when exiting the CMOS/BIOS setup menu. The system will re-boot and initialize the new setting. If every goes well, you will see the Windows Setup Menu. Follow and choose the options available from the menu.

Good Luck

Does it try to read the cd? Do other cd-roms work in the drive?

If answer #1 does not work, then I suggest that you try making another set of boot disks and trying again.

You may have a bad win2000 cd. Or you may have a bad cd-rom drive.
