Windows 7 right click brings windows restart, no icons.

    by vloesch873 ·

Hi. I am stymied and stuck – suggestions would be welcome. I have a Windows 7 64bit problem. I think there was a Windows update attempt, or uninstalling a program upset the system. Since this many icons are missing, their apps I cannot get to work. Right click on icons and on many other things just brings a Windows restart.
So I cannot back up. The Restore Point I set a week ago has vanished, only one for 2020 is there, but it would cost many reinstallations if I use it.
I cannot use scannow as the command prompt Use as Administrator is now missing. So also cannot do other things to fix problems. Cannot delete iconcache or rebuilt it, for e.g.
When I try to use the Windows 7 emergency boot disk, the mouse does not work, & there is a screen asking choose what method of input, but only an image of US English is there, no mouse function. Not the usual boot disk scenario. Norton virus scan is clear.
Should I instead update to Windows 10, then 11? Or is there a way to fix this without access to command prompt as admin and without right click capability?

We need a bit more information, how old is this PC? Have you noticed any odd behavior such as fans running constantly which would indicate over-heating, or strange noises from the case? Sometimes a failing hard drive can show problems. Also, since Win7 is out of support, I doubt an update caused your issue, UNLESS you attempted to install one manually. What programs did you remove? It is possible you removed something needed by Windows. Other hardware issues may be in play, such as a mouse going bad, so you could try another mouse if you have one.
Other than that, try rebooting and holding down the F8 key, which should allow you to restart in a safe mode, and possibly recover your restore point.

Wizard57M-TR. The PC is maybe 5 years old. I have not heard extra fan noise. Yes, someone might have tried to do a Windows update.
I cannot see any new Windows extensions in the Powershell list.
Windows struggled and failed to open properly in a restart, left with a plain ordinary blue desktop without any icons.
      There is an iconcache problem?
      Now running in safe mode.

While I can’t be 100 percent certain, this could be a problem with the hard drive controller software, as many of my search results indicate that Paragon writes the driver for some brands of hard drives, but according to Paragon it should be OK anyhow…might try reinstalling this driver if you can.
I didn’t find anything on schannel 36997…schannel is the security handler for drivers and software that has a security certificate and has been approved by Microsoft. I did find a few references to schannel 36887…could this be the error? Anyhow, perhaps this Microsoft doc will have something to point in the direction of a solution…

The other error in WS_FTP may be related to security…you could try reinstalling that.

Such a boot disk comes with its own drivers, and doesn’t rely on anything on the hard disk. If the mouse doesn’t work then, it seems a hardware issue to me.

Thank you both. It is very weird. I found the original Windows 7 disk, tried to boot from it, but apparently there were problems with the cd drive (looks fine on Device Manager though) So it just restarted the faulty Windows 7. This time a few icons were different, but still not linking to .exe files.
The mouse works fine with the faulty Windows 7, just did not work in Safe Mode.

When this problems started, the recent Restore points vanished as well.

I reinstalled backup software, and am now backing up all our data & pics, etc.

Right click is still not working, still causing Windows restart. A lot of programme .exe files are missing even though the software is still there on the Programs and Features list. All is now happening more slowly.
Mozilla Thunderbird email icon, Norton anti-virus, PeaZip, Gimp and a couple of other app icons are not affected by the issue.

When the backup is complete I will try upgrading to Windows 10, see if that works.

Hopefully a fix, but upgrade to Windows 10 from 7 is rare today.

Too many hurdles to list but let’s look at the RIGHT CLICK closely. You’ll need a tool like https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shell_menu_view.html to view and disable/remove items until you find the bad one.

About that upgrade. Microsoft no longer has a program in place for a free upgrade and since W10 shipped over 5 years ago in 2015 it’s odd to see a 5 year old PC with W7. More often we find the owner has a much older PC or had someone install W7 for reasons.

I’m happy to see that backups are underway since the path to W10 is most likely to be a clean install.
