Windows 8.1 prevented from booting by AMD Catalyst Centre

I have downloaded and installed Windows 8.1 (Australia) this morning. Installation was OK (after removing a rogue hasp driver left from a Lightworks install). This went OK and booted into 8.1. Screen was not properly filling so I downloaded and installed the Catalyst centre for fine tuning (64 bit version) from AMD site. Aftter the install, it rebooted. That is where it stopped. It goes to the rainbow coloured screen (looks like the new win 8.1 lock screen?) and then stops. No input devices then work. Keyboard lights are dark, mouse light is dark. Tried repairning with win 8 DVD but it can't, not surprising. Now I don't know what to do, I'd love a system restore but can't get there.
