Windows 95 running on a P4 1.6 Mhz

By HBB ·
Does anyone know if there are any known issues trying to load Windows 95B on a new P4 1.6Mhz PC
Get message:
"While initializing device IOS:
Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer"
Same message comes up on reboot

Possible issues:

There is a known issue with W95, and AMD processors faster than 350MHz. So, it wouldn't be hard to believe that there would be problems with Intel CPUs at 5X that speed.

How much RAM is installed? There is a W9X/Me bug with more than 511MB of RAM where Windows runs out of resources at startup.

This error is also very similar to one I have gotten when the RAM I had was not compatable with the motherboard.
Perhaps, W95 cannot deal with the RAM interface on it's own.
If so, you now have a conundrum: How to install the chipset driver before installing Windows!

One "trick" to try would be to install 95 onto the drive connected to an older system with the same make chipset.
Make sure that you have the driver file for the new chipset on the drive, and expanded if it is a compressed archive.
Then, install the drive back into the new system.

It is a driver issue with the chipset on your board. We have not been able to load Windows 98 on a Dell 4300 (1.7ghz)without serious issues. We loaded Windows 2000 on the system in a breeze. Although most of the difficulty was the drivers, the olderOS is just not made to run on a newer chipset. Good Luck. I would like to know if you were successful.

I have got around it by loading Win 98se
The reason win95 was required was to keep things legal but have since found a license for 98se and that works fine

I think Chas is correct. My question is why in the world would you want to run W95b? I would run W98se before I would run W95b. W95b is the buggiest OS I have ever had to support. My upgrade from 3.11 worked better than this OS.
