windows 98 black icons

By ndean ·
Our network administrator has developed user profiles for grades 5-12 in our school district. We re-imaged the desktops in our 2 labs (50 dell pcs)first from the server image which included updated versions of IE 5.5, Encarta 2000, and Office 2000. The pcs were clean when we imaged. When the students began to logon, we developed a problem with desktop icons and application icons turning black. We thought it might be the user.dat file so, we deleated the student's .dat file, cleared the users from the profiles in windows, and repaired the icons for all users. The desktop remained clean until the students logged on again. If anyone knows where else we can look to solve this problem it would be appreciated. By the way, we also tried toreplace the icon cache file to no avail. Help!

The Video Card

by dr.debugger In reply to windows 98 black icons

It sounds like you have some software loaded that may be playing having with a video driver or the video card itself. This is particularly true if you are running Direct/X. Another place you can look is how much memory is available. If you have avery small amount of video memory, try changing the settings to 640x480 256 colors. It may not be pretty, but at least you?ll know if your clicking on ?my computer? or ?recycle bin? :)

I am not sure if you got an answer for your problem, but I remember seeing your problem because I was experiencing the same thing. I finally was able to find the solution. Go to microsoft's site and look for Q133733. This solution does work!!!!!!!!
