Windows 98 out of range

By Jake4744 ·
I have a computer that has win98 on it. Every time it boots up the windows screen will come up and then go blank with a message that says "windows is out of range". It will allow me to go into windows in safe mode but I still haven't figured out to fix the porblem. I'm not sure if I can even fix it in safe mode. Any help I can get would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Windows 98 out of range

2 thoughts.

1. Does the PC have over 511MB of RAM?
There is a bug in W9X that can cause a non-boot condition if there is more than 511MB of RAM.
This bug is VERY configuration dependant.

2. How much free space is there on the hard drive?
I like to have a minimum of 500MB free space for Windows 9X for the swap file, and other floating system files.

Saw that message once on a customers Win98SE machine, I solved it in "Safe Mode" by running Disk Cleanup (check all avail. boxes), then ran a Scan Disk Minimum (w/ the fix errors box checked), then a full Scandisk (w/ the fix errors box checked), then a full Defrag. Thing booted right up afterwards (customer had set a huge pagefile instead of letting windows manage it). Norton's Win Dr. & Disk Dr. could help too, just boot off the CD in "Safe Mode" allow Win Dr. to run and fix any problems (beaware that no undo engine is avail. though when the Norton utilities are launched from the CD, unless you have Norton's Utilities Installed and can get to them).

But do check the amount of RAM first.

Good Luck.

Boot into safe mode and change the video resolution back to 600x480.

Basically the video settings have become corrupt and the monitor cannot adjust properly, its the monitor that is reporting the 'out of range' message not windows.

After you have changed the resolution back to 600x480, you should be able to boot back into windows normally. You will then be able to change the resolution back to 800x600 or whatever is was.

It may have something to do with your video settings. boot into Safe Mode and set your video to 256 or 16 colors and 640X480 resolution. Click on the advanced button and set you refresh rate to Adapter Default or Optimum. This setting can be found on either the adapter tab or the monitor tab depending on the system. When you boot back into normal mode it should come up fine and allow you to change the settings to something more pleasing to the eye.
