    Windows 98 Restart

    Locked

    by ilgwk ·

What can I do to correct a problem that freezes a computer when I have attempted a Windows 98 restart. I can shut down OK but the Windows 98 shutdown screen just sits there and nothing further occurs so I am left with no other alternative but just turn off the PC.

If it’s Second Edition, you may need the shutdown patch, which you can get here:

      http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q239/8/87.ASP

(Sometimes when I copy and paste URL’s it looks ok to me but once the answer is posted, an extraneous space will have crept in. Make sure you delete any extraneous spaces or the page won’t load).

The URL provided to me started me in the right direction. After that I sorted through the menues and disabled fast shutdown and now I restart, shutdown, and atartup faster and without the windows startup/shutdown screen. I couldn’t follow the suggestions at the URL site as I do not have win98 Second edition and my Menus, etc are different. More simple than I thought.

Just an add-on: If you still experience problem, a big culprit is the video driver. You might reinstall existing driver, or look for updates for it on videocard manufacturer’s website and apply it.

Also, the problem could be a program running inthe background that doesn’t participate in the shutdown correctly. Go to Start>Run, enter “msconfig”. Go to the “Startup” tab, this shows a list of programs that start and shutdown along with your OS. Go back to the “General” tab. Uncheck the “Load startup group items” box, OK it, restart to implement the change. Then try shutdown. If it fixes it, then you can leave all startup items disabled, or re-enter msconfig as described before, go to the Startup tab, and re-enable one item, OK it, restart PC, then shutdown. Repeat process until it hangs again on shutdown, perhaps that will smoke out the offending program. Warning, my experience is that sometimes it looks like the problem is fixed, only to show up again sometime down the road. Oh, well, its Windows. Good luck.
