Windows 98 Shutdown

By JCosten ·
What is the problem when Windows 98 does not completely shutdown? I get to the screen where the message "Windows is now shutting down" and it goes no further.

There are many causes of this. What is the last program you installed before this started happening? Look at the above site and work through the MS shutdown patch for Win98 and any of the other possibilities that may be causing this.

There are many patches for that, but it's essentially due to mapped drivers. The more mapped drives, the harder to shutdown.

Microsoft says : we don't plan to modifie w98, migrate to WinME (!).

You'll find anyway patches in windows update site.

I had this problem on my home network. Basically if you can shutdown any other machines on the network first then the probelm station will shut down ok. IF that dosn't work or you need to kepp the other boxes on, manually disconect from the network, unmount any mapped drives etc. If it is still giving you hassle, log of and then press escape at the windows login screen so that you can shut down the machine without it being logged on to the network. If it is not connected to a network and Im barking up the wrong tee I appologies...
