Windows 98 system resource management

By minsteness ·
During the day as I open an close applications my system resources get used up and the system bogs down. When I close the applications there is no change in the amount of system resources. The only way I can free up resources is to restart the computer. Is there another way to free up system resources without restarting the system?

The only way I know of, or can think of, is to press control-alt-del and end any taks/processes that are running that you do not need. Some applications may leave something running even after closeing it down and the only way to get rid of it is toeither end it manually or reboot you pc. For windows to run you only need two things. Explorer and Systray.

Go to start run and type msconfig
Take out everything in the startup except systry and explorer.
Check the win.ini and make sure nothing is loading under run=
or load=
Your GUI still loads and you can access things thru icons or programs list.
Chect the network configuration and make sure you don't have unneeded protocols loading.

The above answeres only allow your system to have more resources at startup, but eventually your resources will be used up and slow the system once again.
The sure way is to restart the sytem, but there is another way that will not take the system as long as a restart.
Click on start and choose to Log Off.
This will close all applications and bring the Logon window up for you to sign on.
This will refresh the system resources.
