Windows desktop won't refresh!!

By jerantm ·
I have a PC at work that has Windows 98 2nd Edition. Whenever I unzip files to the desktop or any folder that is currently open, the file system will not refresh by itself. I have to hit F5 to refresh the file system and see the files. If that doesn't work I have to either open File Explorer, close it and then hit F5 or I have to goto the display properties and press OK there then hit F5 on the desktop to view the newly placed files. I have been looking forever to solve this problem, but nobodyhas a clue. Please help....by the way, reinstalling Windows does not help either....the problem appears right after a fresh installation of Windows. This problem also does happen when the PC has any Win9x OS on it.

You didn't say what type of video card you have installed. Does it have the latest drivers installed? Try moving it into another slot. Also, is the keyboard F5 key the problem? Try swapping out the keyboard with a known good one just to make sure. Can you set the refresh rate for your video? Try different settings if the first two suggestions don't help, just remember what your original setting was as it's probably the default. Good luck.

This same thing happened to me. I tried the video drivers, etc as mentioned above-- To no avail. (not that you shouldn't try that anyway, JIC)
It eventually drove me so nuts that I buckled down and reformatted and did a fresh install from (literally) scratch. That fixed it for me.

Thanks, but I can reformat from scratch and install Windows 95, 98 or 98 SE and it still happens.

In one of your folders, go upto View>Folder Options.

In there choose the View tab and click on Restore Defaults. Then Apply it to all folders by clicking on the "Like Current Folder" button. This will restore all default settings in the folders, which should include automatic refresh. If this does not work, please reject this straight away so I can give you info on other methods,

Hope it works though,

Steve

Thanks, this answer sounded hopeful, but it didn't work. Even right after a fresh install, this problem still occurs.
