Windows Explorer-NT

By peter_robbins ·
I really need to get to the bottom of this Windows Explorer lockup problem I've been experiencing. Often when I try to view the contents of a large folder (many files), the file list is repainting the icons(autocad icon), then just locks up. It willalso lock up all other explorer windows, and won't allow access to the start menu. My only option is to ctrl-alt-del, bring up the task list and end task on the explorer window that locked up. It will then terminate
all explorer windows, dump anything I have running in the taskbar, and reload everything in startup. I am running Windows NT 4 with service pack 6. It did this with service pack 4 and 5 as well.

How much RAM do you have in this computer?

When is the last time you did a defrag?

Is it hanging on the same file within the folder each time?

Are you running any type of virus scanner?

How many other programs do you have active in memory?

768 meg of ram, defrag often, day before latest hang, have not noticed that it hangs on same folder but do know another machine here hangs the same way. no virus scanner. there is usually Omnis(database), Word, Excell, Outlook, and a couple of Autocad sessions running. we are on a novell 5 network running the latest novell client. it is a folder that resides on the server that hangs.
