Windows Freezes

By MinoTaur3 ·
Alright - so my friend asked me to fix his laptop, the problem is -- windows boots up normally, and after 5-6 minutes it completely freezes and I have to restart by holding the power button..

So i reformatted his harddrive, and it still had the same problem

I put in a brand new harddrive and loaded windows xp sp3 on it, and it still has the same problem..

I was thinking it may be a heating problem

thank you!

I think the same.
Check the hardware monitoring in BIOS

If it is heat

Check all the heat syncs on the machine, a lot of times dust and lint collect on them and cause issues.

I'm thinking maybe some Diagnostics are in order here

I would start off with getting a copy of the Ultimate Boot CD and making yourself a copy of this Disc and booting off it, then running some Diagnostics.

This is free to download so make sure that you click on the actual Download link and not the add on the page.

Test the CPU, RAM and HDD as a start and if nothing shows up with those work your way through the others tests.

Try and update the memory to at least 2 to 4gb if at all possible. This will give you a smoother running system.
