Windows Installer not working

By jmoore ·
OK, I removed the Nimda virus from my Win 2000 Server and now Windows Installer will not work. I done all the suggested procedures; renamed the msiexec.exe file and related dll files and reinstalled using the latest version. No good! I get no help other than a Windows generic 1015 error suggesting possible registry problems. I've reinstalled the OS, after formatting the partition, I've used Nortons to scout for obvious errors, I've tried other versions of the Windows Installer. Help!!!!

Windows Installer not working

Other versions of the Windows Installer - so you have installed the Windows Installer 2.0? (It can be downloaded from:)

How did you remove the virus? If you have more than one partition but only formatted one, then it is possible you have been reinfected. Nimda puts infected files in various places, on multiple drives (if available).

McAfee's article about Nimda says,
"Removing this threat requires patching vulnerable systems, disabling network shares, and using the latest DAT files. It can not be removed manually.
Infected systems must:
apply the patches below
close any network shares prior to cleaning
exit any running applications
Stop a running IISserver
Scan and clean each drive
Restore the RICHED20.DLL and MMC.EXE files if they were overwritten by the virus and deleted by the scanner.
Failure to take these actions may result in reinfection.

The entire McAfee article can be found at:

It sounds like you may have gotten reinfected.
