Windows Installer pop-up

By lindsayt ·
Have a WINXP sp2 system which had a crash. After repairing the hardware problem that caused the crash, I keep getting a pop-up window for Windows Installer. This happens anytime I start and Office application and many times when a program like quicken or turbo tax loads a different library. When this happens the PC locks up for 45 seconds to a minute and then the pop-up disappears and the program runs normally. I have tried going back to a restore point (before the crash) and also did a reinstall(repair) of the OS. The problem remains. Any ideas?

What does the popup say?

by Richdoode In reply to Windows Installer pop-up

Is it asking you to run an update? If it is an error the installation may be corrupt. Reinstall from this download: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=889482FC-5F56-4A38-B838-DE776FD4138C&displaylang=en

Windows Installer pop-up

The window just says "Windows Installer" with a "Cancel" button. No identification of who it's trying to install. Clicking the cancel button or using task manager to kill it still has the long delay before it goes away.

Well if you really want to try fixing this

by OH Smeg In reply to Windows Installer pop-up

Start off with Crap Cleaner and clean the unit up. Crap Cleaner will edit the Registry and remove any problems there within reason of course It's available for download here

After a Hardware failure I've always had to

by OH Smeg In reply to Windows Installer pop-up

Repair the Windows Install by doing a In Place Install of the OS by following these directions.

While this should keep your installed Software and Data Intact you should still do a complete Backup and be prepared to do a Complete New Install or Re image if it fails.

Windows Installer pop-up

by lindsayt In reply to Windows Installer pop-up

I run ccleaner about once a week, and this problem evades solution. It just pops-up and says "Preparing to install..." and finally goes away. The hardware problem I had was a couple of bad sectors on drive c. I used the Hitachi diagnostic to reclaim the bad sectors. Before the reclaim, I was using diskeeper in its behind the scenes mode and when it hit the bad sectors it would crash the system (many times, until I figured what was going on). Obviously, something was erased when the bad sectors (I thing 2) were reformatted, but I don't know what was lost. I first tried a relatively recent restore point which didn't help and then tried the earliest restore point available, but again, no luck.

You most likely are looking at a Registry Error

by OH Smeg In reply to Windows Installer pop-up

Which will not be cured by rolling back. The fastest and correct way is a In Place Install to cure the problem.

But if you like messing around and wasting time you can start off by Editing the Registry and working from there to find a solution.

Just remember to take a Backup of the unaltered Registry in case you **** it and make the system unbootable.
