Windows installer Problems

By huytonm ·
I cannot install or remove any programs that use windows installer and get the following error message"the installation package could not be opened, verify that the package exists and that you can access it",also I started to get windows installer starting every time I started my computer trying to install windows live mail and cancelling it did no good as it kept on coming back,I have partly sorted this by deleting the folder it was trying to access and now only comes up once on start up.
I have tried unregistering and reregeristing windows installer, no joy I have also checked I have the correct permisions to allow windows installer to work but again no joy,and have service pack three installed.
I am running XP pro media center edition, and would be greatful for any help on this subject.

So tell us , are you trying to Un-install some programs?.

If so tell us which programs you are trying to un-install and we will do our very best to help you. The first place IF your trying to delete programs is the "add and remove" section in Windows. The other way is through the registry, but this is the last place you will wont to fiddle with If you do not know what you are doing.

Please post back if you have any more problems or questions.

If you want to stop programs from starting up,,

Use Task Manager to Stop Unresponsive Programs

SUMMARY: Keep malfunctioning Windows XP software from slowing your computer to a halt.

If an application hangs in Windows XP, you may be able to stop it manually by opening up Task Manager. Note that you should only do this if you have tried everything else to restart the software in question. Also, closing software using Task Manager may erase all unsaved data in the program in question.

To pull up the Task Manager, try one or more of the following:

1) Right-click on an empty area of the Windows XP toolbar and choose "Task Manager".
2) If that fails to work, press CONTROL-SHIFT-ESC.
3) If that fails to work, try CONTROL-ALT-DEL.

If Task Manager starts, click on the "Applications" tab. Right-click on the program that is not responding and choose "End Task". Follow the instructions if prompted. You may have to force an application to stop two or three times. Or go to the "services" section and (if you know the program) scroll down the list and when found right click on it and select "stop service".

Task Manager is a last resort, but if your computer or a software program hangs, it may be the only way to restore access to your machine without a reboot.

Please post back if you have any more problems or questions.
