Windows/Linus email setup

By jbowser1 ·
I have a small lan with a Novell 4.11 server and about 30 computers running windows 95/98/NT/2000. I'm getting a cable modem installed and want to setup a Linux box to act as a proxy. I'm using Mandrake 8.0 and have installed squid as a proxy. It works fine but I don't know how to set up the email so that the users can access their email using Outlook from their windows machines. I am very new to Linux and would appreciate some detailed help to get this resolved.

It sounds like you need to setup your server as a mail server. I'm not sure if it is sendmail that comes with Mandrake or something else. Sendmail seems to be the standard, although I have heard that qmail is quite good. Sendmail can be tricky to setup, although, once you get it going it should be right. www.sendmail.org will give you information on how to setup the /etc/sendmail.cf file (configuration file for sendmail).

Regards,
Mike.

I run a hosting company on the side of my normal job, I use FreeBSD servers but the setup is similiar. When you get your mail server setup, you'll need to set up your user accounts on that server, and make sure your server has a hostname. Then all you need to do is setup Outlook on the computers to check the mail in this format: account_name@linux_machines_hostname.dom. For example if my linux machines account name was bob, and the linux machines hosname was foo.com, you would have Outlook check mail for user bob@foo.com. Hope this helps you out.
