Change a Login Name in the Registry...

by Peconet Tietokoneet In reply to windows longon

WARNING...Making changes to your registry could make your computer un-bootable::::::

When you first set up a PC running Windows, you are asked to identify the owner of your Windows version. If you make a mistake when entering your desired login name, you can modify it through your system's registry.

1. Open the "Start" menu and click on the "Run" button.

2. Type "regedit" into the text box and hit "Enter." The Registry Editor utility will launch.

3. Use the database tree on the left side of the window to navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion directory.

4. Right-click on the entry labeled "RegisteredOwner" and choose the "Modify" option from the contextual menu.

5. Enter your desired username in the "Value data" field.

6. Press the "OK" button to save your settings.

7. Close the Registry Editor program and restart your PC to begin using the new login name.

Change your Windows password on a stand alone computer (NOT a works computer):

1. Once Windows has launched, click on the Control Panel and then click on Open User Accounts.

2. Once the User Accounts window comes up, click on your account name - the one you would like to change.

3. Select Change My Password

4. Once you have selected Change My Password, you will first need to input your current password, then type in a new password. You will be required to input your new password twice to make sure that you did not make an error the first time around.

5. Besides typing in your new password, you have the additional option of including descriptive text. This makes it possible to either type in a word or phrase that can help you to recall your password if it is forgotten.

6. Once all information has been entered correctly, click on Change Password. You should then receive confirmation that your new password has been received and is active.
