windows me freezes on booting

I am having problem booting my machine. When ever I try to boot, the scandisk strats up and then in the midway it freezes. I would appreciate if some one could help me fix this problem.

This could be caused by a number of thiings
first try booting the system into safe mode
Now try running scandisk and defrag the drive
disable the screen saver
update the video drivers
Check the system to see what programs are loading at startup
The anti-virus software could be scanning files
While in safe mode delete the history and temp folder

Last post is bang on, you may want to use msconfig's 'Startup.ini'tab to see that no unexpected junk is loading at startup.
The best solution, upgrade to WINXP or downgrade to WIN98. Win98 can't really be considered downgrading when removing ME though.
