Windows Ten Pro 64 Won’t Install

    Locked

    by judge dredd04 ·

I had to do a clean reinstall of Windows Ten Pro 64 on my HD. I tried the DVD ISO file but was told you now can’t do this as the DVD is too small for Windows. I have been tring to Install it from a USB but no luck. I feel have spent way to much time on this already. I seem to be just going round in circles. It is doing my head in.

Could the HD have have it? Its a 931GB Western Digital WDC WD10EZEX-00BN5A0 (SATA ). The Bios on booting up says

Bios Asus Republic of Gamers Ver 2.10.1208 American Megatrends.

Any help would be very much appreciated !

Can you tell in more details
      – how you made that Windows 10 install USB-stick
      – what “no luck” exactly means

      ISO?

I haven’t used the ISO in years. I use the Media Creation Tool. I’ve lost count of folk that grab the .ISO and then tell me it doesn’t work.

Otherwise, better then 99% of the time I find the client didn’t have a good bootable USB stick.

          Tips to fix-

          Remove external hardware
          Update Windows
          Uninstall non-Microsoft antivirus software
          Uninstall nonessential software
          Free up disk space

          Greeting,

The second link you give tells about the Media Creation tool, using the Microsoft download site https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 .

That should work, if you do it the right way on functioning hardware. It seems it doesn’t with you. Please tell more about the failure. Even better: tell us all steps you did that work fine. Then end with the step that doesn’t work and gives some error message. What error exactly?

Also please tell why you had to do a clean install of Windows 10.

I see Kees asked for more such as the steps that worked as well as why you need to do a clean install.

I find many clean installs fail if there are hardware issues or the user formatted the drive ahead of the install. We need a BLANK DRIVE for a clean install. No partitions. Leave it blank.

          A couple of things here

Is the USB Drive actually a 32 Gig Drive or a Compressed one that puts the Windows Installer into a Folder on the USB and then runs it through compression software to decompress the contents. If it’s a Compressed USB Device there can be problems with the decompression algorithm throwing up errors and preventing the installation of Windows.

As also stated you need to be attacking the installation with a Blank Unformatted Drive as Windows 10 formats drives in strange ways with a largish partition for a recovery partition and another as a Boot Partition so you need to wipe the drive or unformat it.

I used to use Boot and Nuke to wipe HDD and The Ultimate Boot CD to test hardware as it has heaps of testing utilities on it and it’s free to download and use. Though you can get messed up with some of the testing utilities as different utilities will give different results on different make drives.

WD’s Utility is Data Lifeguard if I remember correctly so use that one as it was built to test WD Drives and gives the correct answers.

The Ultimate Boot CD also has wiping utilities on it and it’s bootable so it’s just a matter of downloading the ISO burning it to a CD or whatever they now use and sticking it into the Optical Drive and in BIOS telling the computer to boot first from the Optical Drive then work through the menu for what you want. Last time I used it it had both Boot & Nuke and Kill Disk on it and for faster wiping Kill Disk is the fastest but regardless let any run till it reaches 10% and then turn it off and the drive is effectively blank as the Master Boot Records are gone but if it was infected with something it’s better to use Boot & Nuke as it writes zero’s to every sector of the drive destroying anything on that sector.

The Ultimate Boot CD is available here but it also has adds so if you are asked to pay you have clicked the wrong link you need to click on ISO Image not Download.

Yes the drive is a actually a 32 Gig Drive. I used Boot and Nuke before you suggested it but Windows still did not Install.

Data Lifeguard has no been replaced by Western Digital Dashboard utility. I cant seem to find a W.D. tool that will check the drive without using Windows.

I think the dive is older then ten years as it was the second H.D. I put in this system build.

The blank driver rproffitt mentions is the hard disk or SSD you want to install on. Not the USB-stick that contains the installer and seems to be fine.

In your original post you write: “Could the HD have have it? Its a 931GB Western Digital WDC WD10EZEX-00BN5A0 (SATA ).” Can you explain why you write that?

It could be it’s defective. Boot into your favorite Linux distro (like Mint or Ubuntu) and have a look at the contents. From Linux also use GPARTED to delete all partitions. Or ask a local computer repair shop to do that for you. If they find it’s broken, and the PC is good enough to warrent a new SSD they can install that. Then you can try yourself to install Windows to it. Unless, of course, you prefer a totally new PC.
Let’s hope you have a good backup.

Regardless Data Life Guard will still report WD Drives Correctly

          by hal 9000 ·

          In reply to Re: install

As it is on the Ultimate Boot CD it’s worth a try but just a warning here if the memory in the system is not matched or has any other fault it will stop Windows Installing so the other utilities on the Ultimate Boot CD may prove useful to test the hardware which in this case seems to be the best way to proceed.

Also will the BIOS Support 64 BIT Software? If it will has it been set to 64 Bit and if it will not support 64 BIT Software the error you are getting is what happens what you attempt to install a 74 Bit OS onto hardware that only supports 32 BIT Software.
