windows update troubleshooting

By christopher.reis ·
I have been trying to use Windows update to download and install security updates as well as other critical updates. If the file is bigger than 600 KB, the file and/or files will get to the end of installation and then stall. It will never complete the installation. I am running a PIII 800 with 256 MB RAM and a DSL connection. Why could it be stalling, and what can I do to fix it? Would it help to close all other running programs while I'm trying to download and install?

Yes, always close everything EXCEPT Explorer when installing or un-installing any program or update in Win95, Win98, Win98SE, ME, 2000, NT4, or XP, also pause the task scheduler if possible (you didn't list your OS). If you still have problems, try running scandisk & defrag first, make sure you have plenty of disk space avail. for the installation of the patches & SP's & programs.

Also if you are running Win98 or ME you may need to get rid of an ActiveX file (CV3 Class) which is the MS WinUpdate ActiveX Program File, when you return to Windows Update it will re-install, just click OK on the cert. as it comes up for the control. (your current AX Control may be damaged or need updating).

Open IE Browser>Tools>Internet Options>Settings>View Objects>Click on CV3 Class (Should be the top file listed or there about), and highlight, then hit delete key. Back out by OK's.>Restart and go back to Win Update page. Try the smaller patches indiv. @ first, if sucessfull, then combine those you can. Restart after every install.

Good Luck.

I had that problem for a couple days a few weeks ago, and it was occuring on each of the four machines I was trying to update. Sometimes it would work, most times it wouldn't. I'm guessing that it had something to do with Microsoft's website, because it worked fine a couple days later. Good luck.

Something else to try would be disabling the "Automatically Check Settings" checkbox in IE. Go to Tools, Internet Options, Connections, LAN settings, and you will see the box. Worked for me on a number of machines.
