Windows Updates

By johnndeb ·
Hi There,
I would like to know how to download Windows Updates to a CD so that i can then take that CD to a PC and install them without having to logon to the Internet. Is this possible.

2 Routes

by TheChas In reply to Windows Updates

I support numerous people that have just dial-up connections. With the size of MS updates, it just takes too long to get them downloaded.

Every Friday evening, I go to www.microsoft.com/downloads and do a search for new downloads.

I then download the newly posted files I need to support my users.

Some Windows Updates are NOT posted to the general download pages. For those, I use the Windows Update Catalog page.

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/

I also subscribe to the TechNet emails and Security Alerts.

The IMPORTANT thing to remember is that ALL updates do not APPLY to ALL systems.

When in doubt, take the system online and run Windows Update to determine what updates the system needs. Then, manually install them from your CD.

Update Inventory Tools

by TheChas In reply to 2 Routes

Microsoft does offer a couple of update inventory utilities that you can use to check for any critical and security updates a system may need.

These don't show every update for a system, just the critical and security updates.

Also, after "Patch Tuesday", Microsoft usually posts a bulk update ISO image that contains all of that months security and critical patches.
