windows vista laptop taking ages to start

Hi, my vista laptop takes ages to start up, sometimes about half an hour. I've tried a few things already like msconfig and disabling unnecessary start up programs, uninstalling unused program, checking Device Manager for any devices/driver issues, running memory diagnostic tool, physically checking RAM (it has 3Gb all been detected, and without errors so I don't think it's a memory issue), running C Cleaner, running chkdsk. The chkdsk did come up with a couple of errors that couldn't be fixed, and the laptop wouldn't start up afterwards. Windows repair failed to fix problem, but the following day the laptop did start, but really slowly still. Sometimes after trying to start for ages I get the BlueScreenOfDeath. I've looked in the event viewer, but I'm not sure what I'm looking for. It's the same in Safe Mode. I'm out of ideas, and hoping someone can help?
Could it be the hard drive?

Any ideas anyone
