Windows/Word XP file creation problem

By Vlad Dracul ·
I'm running a standalone Windows XP Pro system with Office XP. In it, I have 4 accounts: two with administrator privileges and two limited accounts. In those limited accounts, whenever I open Word, I get a "File Creation Problem" stating that it could not create a file for the Cannon BJC-4300; and I don't even have that printer! I don't get the message with the Administrator accounts. I already tried erase the "~temp" files and renaming the "normal.dot" file (Thanks DK), but it didn't work. Anyother ideas?

Windows/Word XP file creation problem

Hi,

Download filemon.exe from www.sysinternals.com this util will tell you about every file and folder access while it is running, as well as the result of that access. log in as admin, run filemon (filtering it to look at only winword.exe will cut down the output), then use 'runas' (highlight winword.exe, press shift and then right click) to run word as a restricted user. Once the error message appears, scan the output of filemon and look for 'access denied' errors. this will tell you what area of the file system word is trying to access at that point. If you get no access denied errors, remove the filter in filemon so that it looks at everything. To immediately fix the problem, open up just that area to all users. I'm a bit intrigued as to why this cannon printer issue is occurring - why not try searching the registry for 'cannon' and see what you find....

Let me know if you need any help with using filemon - darthurs@hotmail.com
