Windows XP appcompat.txt error

By Tom C ·
MS Word 2000 crashes as soon as it opens on only one of the four Windows XP Pro boxs on my network. A search of the web turns up literally hundreds of people with the similar problem with other programs crashing on XP with the same error line... however the MicroSoft site has NOTHING about this error. Oddly enough nobody seems to have an answer posted anywhere either...

Clean install of Windows XP Pro and Office 2000 on a from scratch built system. Tried uninstall, reinstalls, system restore etc. all to no avail. Service Pack 1 and all updates installed.

SOYO P4I875P Dragon 2 Platinum Motherboard
Intel Pentium 4 2.6GHz / 800MHz front side bus
1GB of PC3200 400MHz RAM (2 512MB Crucial)
80GB Serial-ATA 133 Maxtor HD with an 8MB cache

Error is as follows...
Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Click here for info gets
AppName: winword.exe AppVer: ModName: winword.exe
ModVer: Offset: 003e4fbd
clicking further gets...

This file appcompat.txt does not exist on the drive and submitting the report to MS gets no known solution...

Hopefully somebody here has an answer... It has me scratching my head.
