windows xp driver removal

By Shanghai Sam ·
I installed an older CD-RW on my new computer which has windows xp, installed the CD which came with it and rebooted. It aperently was not compatible with xp. I then removed the CD-RW from the computer and removed the software in "add or remove programs" I then bought a new Sony CD-RW that was compatible with Windows XP. This one works fine. The problem is that every time I turn on or reboot the computer, I get a message that says "CD Recording software" will cause windows to become unstable. Windows has prevented these drivers from loading."
What do I have to do to get rid of this message? This message is from the old CD-RW that I removed.

Open up Device Manager (Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System -> Hardware tab -> Device Manager button). Probably expand the cdrom option, and look if your old CDRW is listed. IF so, then right-click and Remove it.
AFter that, click View on top of the Device Manager window and select Show Hidden Devices. A bunch of drivers will now be listed under Non-Plug & Play Drivers. Expand that and look if the drivers are there also. IF so, then Remove them also.

hope this helps

I suspect that some DLL's or registry settings are left over from the software.

I suggest that you contact the software mfg for instructions on how to remove any "left-overs" from an XP system.

I know for a fact that Adaptec / Roxio software leaves behind a lot of stuff in the Registry.

Regclean will remove most if not all from your registry. I've yet to master XP's registry but 9x should be a snap if you feel comfortable editing it.
