Windows XP hangs at startup after SP 1 is added

By joyacita ·
I updated Windows XP Pro with SP1 after loading several drivers. From that time on, XP started to hang at the XP intro screen. I could only work in safe mode. I loaded SP 2, no change. What can I do now? It still will only run in safe mode.

Sounds like one of the newly loaded drivers is conflicting.

Instead of choosing Safe Mode, choose Last Known Good Configuration. If this doesn't work, boot into Safe Mode and start the MS Configuration Utility (Start--Run--type msconfig--OK) and use the Launch System Restore button to restore to a previous date when the system worked fine.

If still not working correctly, boot back into Safe Mode, msconfig, check Diagnostic Startup under the General tab and reboot. This allows you to step through all your drivers one at a time (be patient). Answer y (yes) to each question until you find the driver which doesn't load properly. Then in Safe Mode, delete that driver (roll back to the previous version).

If all else fails, back up needed information, reformat/reinstall/update HD and install SP2 before trying to update any drivers.
