Windows XP Home Edition SP3: How-to Fix & Troubleshoot Problems

By bonnielou432 ·
Hi, I am a NOVICE PC user & I searched but couldn't find the forum I needed to post my question and or PC problems in. My OS is Windows XP Home Edition SP3 with IE7. (Installed IE8 but it wouldn't run) so I went back to IE7. I use Windows Firewall and I recently upgraded my Security from Avanquest Fix-it Utilities 8 to Avanquest System Suite 9. I have DSL HighSpeed & my ISP is QWEST with MSN Browser which I use as my Home Page. I am completely NOVICE with the configurations and settings under all Tabs in Internet Properties (General through Advanced). I do not know what to enable or disable and or what to check or uncheck. My problems: I never had problems when playing at POGO before but now I get a pop-up error: In order to play Pogo games you need to install the latest version of Java Plug-in,(which I already have). So I verify & tested & I do have the latest version, but I still get the same error when clicking a game. So maybe my settings are not correct. Also, when I am on the Internet my PC sometimes reboots by itself then it will disconnect me from the internet about every 20 to 30 minutes with a Pop-up Error: MSN was unable to load a required library msnmetal.dll; with then, another Pop-up Error: Windows Delayed Write Failed: Windows was unable to save all the data for the file...data has been lost. May be caused by a failure of your hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere. Then, my mouse freezes and I have to reboot. After rebooting; I went to the Control Panel, clicked on the Add/Remove Icon to uninstall Avanquest Sys. Suite 9 because I thought this may be the problem. However, the Add/Remove Page only opened for a split second then I was taken back to the Control Panel. Now I can't add/remove programs. I rebooted again & ran a deep scan for any AV and or AS using Avanquest System Suite 9. When it finished scanning, it reported: No Problems Found (which I didn't believe). That is when I Shut Down my PC and will not turned it back on until I get some advice and support from this forum on How-to fix it & or troubleshoot. I am now using my daughter's VISTA PC which runs great with no problems. THANK-YOU, HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU! Sincerely, Bonnie Lou

It sounds like there may be several issues here

If you don't believe the Avanquest scan, try this:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
Download and install the free version. Once installed, start the program, click the Update tab, and Check for Updates. Once it says it is up to date, click the Scanner tab, and choose to perform full scan. This may take a while. (Note: You may actually want to reboot the computer into Safe Mode to do the scan, as it will be more effective this way against some forms of malware.)

"In order to play Pogo games you need to install the latest version of Java Plug-in,(which I already have)."

This may be an effect of the Avanquest or some other security tool. Is there an icon in the tray (by the clock) or in the browser from Avanquest or other software which you could right or left click to bring up a menu or window to allow scripts or other features of pogo.com? "Allow scripts from this site" or "Allow pogo.com" would be a type of selection to look for.

Let's start with those and see where it takes us. There are other possibilities, but scanning for malware first is a good idea.

re: Rebooting to Safe Mode

by ThumbsUp2 In reply to Safe Mode Question

Restart the computer. Once you see the manufacturer's logo (or anything at all on the screen), start tapping the F8 key repeatedly. Eventually, a black/white screen comes up with menu options, one of which is to start in Safe Mode.

It's all in the timing though. While rebooting, you have to catch it after the POST and before you see the Windows logo. If you miss it and Windows starts, at the logon screen just restart and try again. Don't use the power button to restart at this point though, or you'll eventually corrupt Windows.

I APPRECIATE YOUR HELP AND WILL GO AHEAD AND GIVE THIS A TRY. I WILL GET BACK TO YOU TO LET YOU KNOW IF YOUR ADVICE HELPED AND OR IF I NEED FURTHER ASSISTANCE. NOTE: SO YOU SAY IF I RESTART MY PC USING THE POWER BUTTON THEN THAT CAN CORRUPT WINDOWS? OH DEAR, I HAVE RESTARTED MY PC A FEW TIMES USING THE POWER BUTTON TO TURN IT OFF, THEN BACK ON, BUT ONLY WHEN IT WOULD FREEZE.

Re: Power button

by seanferd In reply to THANK-YOU!

You definitely don't want to use the power button to restart in the middle of the boot process.

Sometimes the power button is configured to shut down Windows normally. If so, that is OK.

On the occasions when the computer freezes up, and you can't shut down through Windows, you have little choice but to use the power button.

The risk of powering off, rather than shutting down, is most pronounce when there are files open, especially when being written/edited. When you power off, data is not written back to the hard drive, which could lead to corrupting the Windows installation or your data on the drive. (Always keep your data backed up - documents, photos, etc.)

Again, if you have no choice but to do a hard shut down (power off or unplug), then you pretty much have to do it that way. (It happens.) Sometimes you might notice that Windows has to scan the drive for errors on the next boot after a hard shut down. This is to ensure nothing was damaged.
