Windows XP not recognizing External CD ROM

By AtlBo ·
O.K., I'll do my best to explain this. I've been having trouble booting into Windows XP. Tonight I managed to get in in the safe mode. Not knowing how to get out of the safe mode, I performed a system restore from a recent day when I was able to get into XP. Unfortunately, when XP booted, Windows did not recognize my external CD ROM. Did the restore remove the Windows driver(s) for the USB ports (it's a USB CD ROM DVD unit) or the drivers which are necessary for Windows to recognize USB hardware and for me to operate it? If so, are there files I need to download, and, if available, where might I find them? Thanks in advance...

Well you get the drivers from the System Maker

by OH Smeg In reply to Windows XP not recognizin ...

Or the maker of the M'Board. Of course if it's a White Box the M'Board CD will have the necessary drivers.

What is actually happening here? When you do manage to get into XP can you see your Data and installed Programs?

Do you have a M$ Branded Install XP Disc or a System Makers Recovery Disc? Does this computer support Booting off a USB Device? Actually what is the computer?

Post back with the answers to the above and I or someone else will try to help you out here.

CD DVD Problem

by AtlBo In reply to Well you get the drivers ...

Thanks...the computer is a Dell Optima 260 384 MB DRAM. Actually, there is no problem other than Windows does not recognize the USB ports. There are six of them. All my programs and files are present, thankfully. I do not have a copy of XP as I purchased the computer refurbished. It did come with an XP Product ID code, however. Also, I have no master restore disk. When I plug in CD DVD drive, I get a message in the system tray that the device (the CD DVD) is non funtional. When I click on the message, it says to try again and that, if the device is not recognized, "replace the device". I know the CD DVD works because I just hooked it up to another computer. Also, I don't think the problem is with Dell, I think it is with Windows, although I am not sure. I have tried the unit numerous times in various USB ports front and back.

Problem Resolved Thanks

by AtlBo In reply to Windows XP not recognizin ...

Just tried the unit again and XP picked it up. I didn't do anything other than hook up the unit, so I don't know what happened for the unit to work all the sudden, but all's well that ends well. Thankyou for your help OH...
