Windows XP PRO removal

By tecnalservice ·
When I went to reinstall Windows XP Professional I thought it would just repair the previous Windows XP Pro version on the computer, instead it installed another version of the Windows XP Professional on the same computer making it 2 versions to boot the computer from. The question is how do I remove one version of Windows XP Pro?

Can you boot from each of the choices or does one not work? Sometimes it just appears that a second install has taken place.

If only one works, open msconfig--boot.ini tab--and make sure that only the following entry is listed (unless you have more than one partition on the disk, then you might have to change the partition number). Delete the non-working entry.

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect6

If that is the case you have a problem.

I have never been able to remove the second copy without hosing the primary.

What you should have done is laid out is this Knowledgebase article.

It's simple. You must delete all the files from root (C:\) and the following directory: Windows, Documents and Settings and System Volume Information. You can do this starting in safe mode.
There are some files what you can?t delete, but there are no problem. Sure the optimal way is to format the drive before installing.
