Windows XP professional Internet Issues

By gknicks71 ·
I just installed Windows XP professional on my computer and now I have internet issues. I can no longer logon to my.yahoo.com and my wife and daughters can not loginon to myspace.com.When I had XP home version on this computer I had no problems.I have a 8mb cable connection and most sites no seem to run much slower also.I do a seep test at speakeasy and I still test at 8mb per second.Even sometimes my gmail account will not loin either. When these pages have their errors the page times out and I get a page can not be displayed error.O know the smartest people use these forums and I really need advice. I am using the IE 7.

Thanks Very Much!

PS

My main issue is that I can not login to most secure sites, when I try all the pages time out.I am usually not able to login to my gmail account, and I can never login in to my.yahoo.com our myspace.com..When I try other on secure sites I am getting great speed and am able to access them quickly.

Firewall

by dawgit In reply to Windows XP professional ...

two words:
Firewall, &
IE 7
You will have to configure your firewall to allow the interconnection to those and other sites. The 'new' default is set to block just about everything.

Windows Defender

The internet is full of nasty programs called spyware, adware, which can interfere with Internet Explorer.
Download 'Windows Defender' from Microsoft Downloads page and run a scan of your computer.

Thanks for the reply. I disabled the standard windows firewall and the pages still did not work. Is ther more settings than just disable to make it shutoff? How do I allow certain sites to work?

Need more info about how you connect to ISP

by Why Me Worry? In reply to firewall

Are you doing dialup, DSL using PPPoE, or an always on cable modem connection? Are you using a cable/dsl router and if so, are any firewall options enabled?

If you are directly connected to the internet, go to a command prompt and type ipconfig /all

It will list your PC's IP address info as well as the DNS servers it is using for name resolution

At the command prompt, type ping www.yahoo.com

If it responds with the IP address for yahoo.com (209.191.93.52) or such, then DNS is working OK and you have something else preventing HTTP traffic from leaving your PC.

You can also try this one to see if port 80 is open on your machine:

telnet www.yahoo.com 80

if you get a blank screen and hitting the enter key a few times results in dashes (-), then port 80 is working

If you get a Connection Failed error, then something is blocking port 80

the previous steps are basic TCP/IP troubleshooting and can be used anytime you have an issue communicating over the internet

You need to check IE settings:
1. click Tools, Internet Options
2. Select Advanced options
3. Make sure Use SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0 is ticked
4. Option Help, About IE
5. Check the Cipher Strength is 128 bit.
