Can the machine boot and load windows?

If so, then backup your data files.

If not, then it will be necessary to boot the PC with an alternate OS (e.g. Linux on a CD or USB drive) or remove the drive and connect to a working PC to get the data off of it (USB drive enclosure).

The best bet is to do a 'repair install' of Windows, which should (in most cases) leave your programs and data intact. You would need a bootable XP Home Edition CDROM to do that.

It may be best to do the complete Dell System Restore (CTRL-F11 at bootup) which restores the PC back to the as-shipped-from-Dell state. This will wipe out all data and programs added since the PC was new, but this is probably the fastest method. You would then have to restore your data from backup, and reinstall any apps from their CDs.

Yes it will repair without loosing anything iv done it many times 2 ways one is to boot into windows put in the disk and choose run and type in sfc /scannow
or boot into the windows cd and it should give you the option to repair the installation instead of installing it
