Windows XP SP3

By arb773 ·
Microsoft auto installed XP SP3. It failed, giving the msg 'Access denied'. It supposedly uninstalled SP 3, but it stated XP may not run properly. What an understatement. It messed up my DSL connection to the point that the service rep could not believe it. I even restored to a previous startup with no improvement. Did anyone else have this happen?

Interesting

by The Scummy One In reply to Windows XP SP3

I wonder if something else happened, like a virus or something at or near the same time.

As for me, I recently was updated (even though updates are turned off), the only problems are now when I suspend my system, or if it goes into power save mode, sometimes it shuts down completely (no, not hibernating either).

virus ?

I don't think so, because I was working on a project and everything was fine until the message appeared that the install failed.I had no idea the install was taking place.
Luckily I had just saved what I was working on.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 will be offered on Windows Update when Service Pack 3 releases in the first half of 2008.

It is recommended that you apply the resulting update package to an activated, genuine copy of Windows XP, in a test environment. As with any pre-release software, it is also recommended that you back up files and settings on your machine before applying this update package.

auto-update

by arb773 In reply to Please visit the Windows ...

I did not intend to install this package on my primary machine. Auto update did it. I have turned auto update off so it doesn't install again.

It was probably Office 2003 SP3 :)

by Jacky Howe In reply to auto-update

Monday, Microsoft announced that it would add Office 2003 SP3 to its Microsoft Update listings beginning Feb. 27. Microsoft Update, a companion service to Windows Update, downloads patches and other fixes for the operating system as well as a number of the company?s applications, notably Office.

Unfortunately, I am guilty of something I preach about. That is to "pay attention to what is going on with your computer". In this case I was doing something else and this is what resulted.

just like bad timimg, updates can be a pain sometimes. It also pays to write down the exact error message at the time, if I don't I know that I will forget it.

Strange...

by CaptBilly1Eye In reply to Windows XP SP3

Since Microsoft hasn't officially released Service Pack 3 for XP yet, it seems odd how it could have gotten 'auto installed.'
But I guess stranger things have happened. ;-)

Remember, we are at the mercy of the Microsoft Corp. that thinks everybody else is stupid.
