Windows XP Update blue screen

By srsivs ·
Just re-built my machine and slapped XP Pro on here. Went to do an automatic update for XP SP2 and when the computer restarts, I get the blue screen of death. Tried installing from a known good CD as well and same result. Have new motherboard, CPU, and graphics card in the comp now, but can't see this causing the computer to crash after updating the SP... Anyone have any ideas?

Is this a RETAIL pack of Windows XP Pro ? ...

Or is it one that came with a pre-built system?

If you are doing an install of SP2 then your installed copy of XP Pro HAS to be SP1. Before installing the SP2 did you install ALL the device drivers for this system?

What does the BSOD actually say?

Which Processor?

There is a know bug in XP SP2 that causes a problem with some Intel Prescott Processors.

You can either go straight from SP1 to SP3, or see if there is a BIOS update for your motherboard, or disable the cache RAM.

If this is not the answer, please post back with your system details along with any changes that were made as part of this rebuild.
