WinME freezes 10 seconds at a time

By bill-beaton ·
This is a home-computer, and neither reverting to 98 or upgrading to W2K is an option ... some important device drivers aren't available for those, nor do I want to purchase more MS licenses.

Symptom; the mouse (or sometimes just windows) freeze for anywhere from 5 to 30 seconds, and then the machine comes back. Reboot restores reasonable behavior.

I'm hoping to locate some downloadable patch (MS doesn't have one), or just change some setup or registry item.

Format the drive and reinstall Windows.

Too many applications with data to re-install. Obviously a simple backup won't work in this circumstance.

Have you tried disabling Find Fast?

Yes, that is an absolute on Windows for me.

The system here just freezes after a mouse click ... doesn't much matter what's running, the mouse cursor still moves slowly, but no mouse clicks are accepted. Then, after a while, it starts behavingagain. Sometimes (not always) rebooting helps, which could be indicating a memory leak ... mainly IE (exploder) and Outlook 2000 are what run, although the Shockwave plugin is generally active in the home page on this machine.
