WinMediaPlayer7 crashes playing mpg file

By danbromberg ·
I upgraded form Win 95 to Win 98 and installed a Logitech Webcam Express on my USB port. I upgraded WinMedia Player to version 7 and now it crashes when I play an mpg file which I used to play before these upgrades. Occassionally the file will play fine, but most of the time I get a protection fault in module "unknown", so I'm not even sure which module is at fault causing my MediaPlayer to crash.

Try re-installing Media Player and retest the mpg, and if it still continues to cause the problem then go to Start and click Run and type sfc in the box. It will check and see if there are any problems with the system files and if there are any it will try to fix them. If this works, great, but if not then try to update Win98 by going online with Internet Explorer and clicking on tools and then Windows Update and this will check for a newer version of media player, if there is a newer version then download it and install it.

Thanks, but I'd already reinstalled Media Player and ran the SFC (which reported no corrupt files) as you'd suggested. Version 7 is the latest release of Media Player which is what I downloaded and installed. I am able to play the sample mpg thatcomes with MP7 with no problem. What really puzzles me is that every once in a while I can play my mpg file with no problem using the Media Player 7 that I installed. Even when it doesn't work, my system resources are well over 80% available so I don't see this as a resource issue. When MP7 crashes it produces a dump stating module 'unknown' caused MP7 to crash, along with all the values in the registers, etc. How can I or a professional use this information?

Since its been almost a year since you posted your question, my suggestion is that you download any of the new codecs that ms has and the 7.1 version of media player.
