WinNT backup doesn’t see tape drive.

I have a problem trying to back up data using Windows NT backup application onto an Exabyte 8mm tape drive. It acts as if the drive is not seen by the system. However I can download files off the 8mm tape drive from an executable program (it is a program designed to see and download a specific file type) installed on the same system.
