WINS Won't Work

By jmiller ·
I have WINs on my 2 BDCs with replication. 1 BDC has a 95% success rate on queries received and the other has a 24% success rate. I've recreated the WINs database per Microsoft's article Q168712. I followed it to the letter, but afterwards, the success rates on both servers are around 25%, and I'm not able to resolve names on the other side of the WAN. The BDCs are on opposite sides of the WAN. At this point, I'm forced to restore from the backup that leaves me the the 5 and 95% success rates. Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Jimmy

WINS Won't Work

Hi!

Have you set the WINS servers up as push/pull partners ?

If not check documentation about how to do this, if the WAN link is fast you can set them up as push partners otherwise you might want to set them up as pull partners and only allow pulling of the database at night or something like that.

You need to make sure that entries that are created on siteA are being replicated to siteB. What are the routers inbetween the sites ? If they are Cisco's may I suggest using IP Helpers. You put in the command and point it to the WINS server on the opposite side of the WAN. SiteA wins=1.1.1.1, SiteB Wins=2.2.2.2. RouterA should have an IP Helper pointing to 2.2.2.2, RouterB should have an IP Helper pointing to 1.1.1.1. (Routers dont forward broadcasts, the IP Helper command forwards the name resolution broadcast to a server that can answer the querie). What are the clients using Win 95 ? I've seen win95 clients when configured with DNS entries, try to resolve NetBIOS names using the DNS servers instead of WINS (the item can be check with WINIPCFG - More info).
Good Luck.
