WinXP - slow in accessing files in apps

By wmurch ·
I have a P4/2GHz/256RAM system running WinXP Pro SP1 with MS-Office 2002 SP1. Lately my system is slowing down greatly whenever I have to change folders to save or open a file in Office. For example, when opening an existing XL file, I click on the "Look in" drop down box & then I have to wait sometimes up to 15 seconds before it responds. This also happens when saving. I don't have any problems opening/closing folders in Explorer.
This is driving me crazy & I'd appreciate any ideas.
Manythanks in advance.

WinXP - slow in accessing files in apps

Is this happening the first time you go to save / open a file each day?
Or, does it happen everytime you go to access a file?

I have experiance similar slowdowns the first time I go to switch from the 'default' folders each time I power up my XPbox.

What I suspect is going on is that Microsoft is trying to make it harder for those of us that do not wish to use ONLY the default folders.

One thing that you can do to reduce MS file tracking time, is to install TweakUI, and disable the recent files option on the start menu.
That way, Windows will not need to create and track a link for each file that you open or save.

Thanks for teh quick response. It happens every time. Even if I select a folder from the list that finally appears, it takes a long time to open.
I disabled the recent files option as you suggested, but it made no difference.

Since it is happening all the time, I would start by cleaning out the following folders:

C:\Windows\Temp

C:\Documents and Settings\{User}\Local Settings\Temp

C:\Documents and Settings\{User}\Recent

And, your Internet cache files.

Youcan safely delete any file that is over 2 weeks old.

Empty the recycle bin, and defragment the drive.
(Administrative tools, Computer Managment, Storage)

No guarantees, but that should help.

Sorry it's taken so long to reply, I've been away. No luck unfortunately.

Sorry it's taken so long to reply, I've been away. I re-installed SP1 as Windows seemed to think I didn't have it (I definitely did) & installed SP2 as well, but I still have the problem. I'm still working on it.
