Word 2000

Trying to open files in Word 2000 and get the following error messages:

An error has occurred in your program...Choose Close or Ignore...Chose Close...This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down...Clicked on Details...Winword caused a general protection fault in module GDI.exe at 0026:000014a0.....

I've been unsuccessful on Microsoft's website. Tried the repair option -- didn't work either. Next, tried reinstalling office completely -- didn't work either. Copied gdi.exe file from another Windows 98 machine to the windows\system directory -- no change.

Thinking this might be a Windows 98 bug. One machine is running Windows 98 Second Edition and the other one is running the original edition. Anyone have any other ideas?

It is not either version of win98. Uninstall office 2000 from add/remove programs. Then go to start..find..and find all the files on the c: drive that are left over from microsoft office. Also go to the windows explorer and remove all office associated files that may remain. Reboot and do a clean install. If it fails now, I would try another disk to install from. How much free space is on the drive before you install win2k. If it is full or pushing the limits, this is also a possibility. After you uninstall it, run scandisk. Then go to start..run..and type sfc.exe and let windows see if it ha sany altered files, and if it finds any, replace them off the win98 cd before you do a new install. As wierd as it sounds try to do a complete defragfirst also.

Agree with previous comments, another thing to check, nsure the following registry key has been removed following the de-install of Office 2k

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\OfficeCustomizeWizard\1.0\RegKeyPaths\{00000409-78E1-11D2-B60F-006097C998E7}\OCWAddedContentWritten

If this key if left behind, then you will end up getting a repeat installation rather than a full installation.

GDI.exe would indicate a graphics / screen problem. Have you got the latest display drivers for your graphics card??? Try the card at a different colour depth / resolution. Sounds silly but has been known to work in such cases.
