Word 2000 closes while opening file

From Word 2000, every time my user tries to open a file, Word closes. My user selects File > Open command and selects the files from the local hard drive. Then, a brief hourglass then Word exits.

I am re-running a Norton Virus scan as a precaution but I’m not confident that this is virus related.
