Word 2000 freezing browsing network

By max ·
I have a client that is using Word 2000 for word processing. There is a share on their server where they are keeping all active documents. A couple of the workstations are running in to a problem where after having edited and saved several documents, when they attempt to open a document from the server, Word freezes as they try to scroll down the list of folders and documents. There is a lot of folders (1,600 or so) containing 15,000 or so files. Is that the problem or did I run into a bug?

What OS is on the workstations?

Is this a peer-to-peer network or a Windows domain?

And yes, there are known issues with slow browsing of a network and Windows XP.

See http://www.ss64.com/nt/slow_browsing.html for some suggested resolution steps.

I have seen this and if I remember correctly it had to do with Word trying to index the contents of the network directory.

Does it only happen the first time the user accesses the directory after opening Word? eg. go back again without closing Word and see if it comes right up. Then see if closing and re-opening Word resets it to slow. Also, if it is ok after first slow access see what happens after a reboot.
