word 2000 hangs

When opening a word document in word 2000 the program hangs when I use ctrl
+alt+del I get a error message- the system is dangerously low on resources- I have already renamed the normal.dot. File as suggested by Microsoft but that did not work. I also have uninstalled and reinstalled word 2000 but I still have the same problem.

Delete any temp files left by Word. They start with a tilde (~). In most cases you can delete
~*.*
Start Word in :safe: mode.
Winword.exe /a
That will start word without Normal.dot or any add-ins. Then check Templates and add-ins if necessary
