word 2000 hangs

When opening a word document in word 2000 the program hangs when I use ctrl
+alt+del I get a error message- the system is dangerously low on resources- I have already renamed the normal.dot. File as suggested by Microsoft but that did not work. I also have uninstalled and reinstalled word 2000 but I still have the same problem.
